Notes:
Louis Lenz Inventory # 70 of 71; "The Key to the City of Houston" published in 1908 contains an article by Mrs. M. B. Urwitz,, page 132, describing the placement of this D.R.T. marker on March 27, 1908, the anniversary of the massacre at Goliad. The current marker contains the same wording but it is dated 1914. Original plaque placed upon William Marsh Rice's hotel (1882 Capitol Hotel) which was sold to Jesse Jones in 1911, Jones razed that building and opened the current Rice Hotel in 1913. Per DRT Annual Proceedings April 20-21, 1915 bronze tablet ceremony on May 26, 1914 placed the current marker on the hotel.
Directions: plaque on the Texas Street side of the old Rice Hotel, now the Post Rice Lofts, to the left, facing, of the main entrance

Key Time Period: 1836 - 1845 Republic of Texas

Corretions/New Research:

Original plaque dated 1908 was probably lost, damaged or destroyed when the old Rice hotel was razed in 1913, this replacement marker, dated 1914, was re-dedicated by the DRT on May 26, 1914
